A few weeks ago, I bought a book, either at Newbury Comics or at the Borders closing sale, but where I got it doesn't particularly matter. It sat on my shelf for a while, and then, because I've been in a book reading mood lately, I picked it up again. I started reading it during my lunch break yesterday, and kept reading in the evening until I had devoured the whole thing. It was amazing, and so, I decided I should recommend it to all of you, since many of you may agree with me.

Title: Objects of Worship
Author: Claude Lalumière
ISBN: 978-0-9812978-2-8
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Objects-Worship-Claude-Lalumiere/dp/098129782X/
It's also apparently available for Kindle; I don't know about other eBook stores.

Objects of Worship is a collection of short stories, and to say they are "creepy" would be to both understate the point and misrepresent them in some ways. The author hails from Montreal, or thereabouts, so many of the stories take place in Montreal or feature Canadian characters. The characters themselves represent a broad range; women and men, varying ethnicities, varying time periods. Some are zombies. Some are superheroes. Some are gods. They inhabit our world, alternate worlds, a future where zombies farm 'fleshies' (leading, of course, to natural concern for animal rights). The stories contain a strange mixture of the erotic and the grotesque, and shies away from neither. If you like that sort of thing, you'll probably adore this book as much as I did.

It's hard to describe the stories without giving away the most intriguing parts, the parts that are the most fun to discover for yourself. I think perhaps it suffices to say that the narrative voice is fully immersed in the world of the story. When we meet George and Raymond, we are given their worldview--their happiness at their choice to adopt a fleshie child; how lovely it is to hear the sound of his screams every day. We meet Cleo and her lovers--West, Assaad, Patrice and Tamara--and their children; Sonya, and Njàbò, who might be a god. We meet the survivors of a sudden ice age. We meet Coro the lame, who dreams of flying with the warriors of the Green Blue and Brown God and so, goes on a journey across the flat earth. We meet a retired fisherman, who gets tangled up with heroes and gods after he sees a woman walk into the poisoned sea.

Every world is fully realized; they're rich and vibrant and disturbing all at the same time--real worlds full of impossible things. It is hard to do this in a novel, and I would venture even harder to accomplish in short story format, with such limited space to explore. Lalumière does it by presenting the fantastical through the lens of the mundane. Rose and Sara argue over whether Sara takes proper care of their household god. The son of a superhero fights with his brother, who cannot reconcile his religion with his powers. George and Raymond want a family.

The writing is flowing and evocative when it needs to be, and sparse when it needs to be. Some of the stories are linked together, existing in the same world. Things like stores and titles of comic books connect them, and there are more subtle connections as well. Despite the broad range of the book, it remains a cohesive whole, suitable to curl up with and read straight through, though the short story format allows the reader to take it in bite-sized chunks or skip around at leisure.

If you enjoy comic books, mythology, Lovecraft, speculative fiction, or zombies (or, preferably, all of those), I think you'll find things to love about Objects of Worship. I found it absolutely enthralling, and it's rare anymore that I find something I put firmly into the "couldn't put it down" category. I highly recommend this book; it's a truly imaginative and unique collection.

A final note:
All of this said, it's important to note that there are elements in the book that are disturbing, possibly to the point of being triggering to some readers. Please proceed with caution. I will note for the record that there is no rape, though there is some imagery that might be considered sexualized violence (Note: it is REALLY hard to describe this book without spoiling everything...), and no graphic depictions of self-harm. There is, however, a certain loving attention to gore in some places (though always within the context of the story--there's no torture porn), and some animal harm (again, within context, but it's there). If you know you have certain triggers and would like fair warning, I would be happy to answer any specific questions either in the comments or via PM or email.

Hey, all! So, because I fail and stuff, I have extra tickets to several upcoming shows that may be of interest to people. I have the tickets in-hand, and I'm selling the spares for face value (listed); you can either meet me at the venue or I can try to mail them or something, but if I'm mailing them I'll need Paypal ahead of time. Otherwise, either Paypal or cash-at-the-door is fine.

If you own one of these, please comment or email me or tweet at me or something so I don't have to go crazy wondering? TY! <3 <3 <3 I promise to write down your names this time!

I think you guys should ask me questions about any of my fics. Like, thinky thoughts (MY FAVORITE) or even "WHY ON EARTH DID YOU DO THIS, IT'S BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY" and such.

I am in a write-y mood, so I'm all for talking about my fics! (Plus these things seem to be where all my sequels come from... *looks at [livejournal.com profile] psuedo_catalyst* )

Because Twitter was not the ideal environment for this sort of discussion topic...

Safe Sex & Porn

Readers, what is YOUR take on the topic of safe-sex practices in porn? (Fic porn, filmed porn, whatever.) Does it turn you on/off? What about a distinct LACK of safe-sex practices in your porn? Do you sit there thinking, No condom?? >:( or UNF. I WILL BE IN MY BUNK!? Are certain unsafe-sex practices kinks and others total turn-offs? Is it sexy when Character A says "I forgot the condoms" and Character B says "Do it anyway", or do you cringe and hit the back button?

LET US TALK ABOUT WHAT TURNS US ON. FOR ~*SCIENCE*~! (Or, y'know, just because it's fun. XD )

My two cents... )

(Please feel free to discuss/debate/talk about your differing opinions. I trust you guys to respect each other, and each other's kinks! <3 )

ETA: Hi there, metafandomers! You're more than welcome to throw your two cents in! Additionally, this post is mirrored on LJ here, if you are interested in the comments there, or prefer commenting on LJ. <3
solarcat: (Gen -- Pen & Ink)
I have come to the sad realization that my WIPs folder really contains very little in the way of PWP and/or short-and-porny prompts/ideas/fics of any kind. As I procrastinate on my longer, plottier WIPs by writing porn, this is a PROBLEM, of the highest order. SO.

With this in mind; PROMPTS PLEASE? =D?

I'm mostly looking for Mike Carden/Kevin Jonas, but y'all know basically what I write, I guess.

Also willing to write MCR, Panic!, etc (no Brendon/Ryan, thanks), and for those of you not even in western media, I feel like I could probably do Petshop of Horrors (WTF am I saying? I would LOVE to do Petshop of Horrors!) and maybe Gundam Wing or HikaGo? The usual pairings, you all know what's up. <3

Um. I should also say that I'm not guaranteeing fics for anything? I'm woefully bad at that. But I'm in serious need of prompts, so. NOW IS THE TIME, IF YOU EVER WANTED ME TO WRITE SOMETHING. >.>;;;
solarcat: (Gen -- Blue Keys)
Oh, I am woefully late. But here, at last, is my wrap-up of 2010's writing endeavors, and final, year-end wordcount! \0/

Fics What I Published in 2010 )

This was obviously the Year of Skippy, with Mike Carden/Kevin Jonas fics making up the majority of my wordcount, and of my fannish efforts in general. I am still very much in love with Skippy, and have a bunch of Skippy WIPs that I'll be working on in 2011, so it looks like this might be another Year of Skippy, though with a bit of Frank/Gerard on the side. *G*

All of which brings my wordcount for 2010 to a grand total of:

76950 / 75000
(102.6%)

76,950 WORDS!

Which means I beat my self-imposed wordcount goal for the year by ~1,950 words! \0/ GO ME!

Considering that in 2009 I only managed to write about 27,000 words, and at the time I considered that seriously impressive, I am so incredibly proud of myself. Now to keep it up! I don't think I'll up my goal for 2011; if I can hit 75k for the year again, I will count myself a successful and goal-meeting person. :)

I would post a WIP roundup, but those take kind of forever to do, and I need to go to sleep soon. So I'll post a fresh, 2011 WIP roundup soon-ish. *G*

Thanks go out to:

[personal profile] sofiaviolet for the U-Haul gift certificate. <3

[livejournal.com profile] mayqueen517 for the awesome TAI... icons. <3
I'm still trying to decide which ones to use!!! SO MANY CHOICES, ALL OF THEM AWESOME, ZOMG.

Anonymous Lovely Person for the Lane Bryant gift card. <3

You are all wonderful. Thank you so much!! *big hugs to everyone*
solarcat: (Xmas -- Candy Canes)
Step One
- Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Harry/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real-life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Step Two
- Surf around your friends list (or friend’s friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.
- You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call.
- There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My Christmas Wishes )

I know it's simply an artifact of a simpler time on the internet, but am I the only one who gets blindsided by fics that use the old system of fic-length measurement?

Because, okay, there is a BIG difference between the following:

200KB

200k

Can you all see the difference?

The difference is about 175,000 words of content, give or take.

I guess my annoyance comes from the fact that a fic is, to me, an investment. I choose to invest in THIS fic experience over THAT fic experience on the basis of factors X, Y, and Z. Maybe X (the fandom/pairing) is the same, but Y (the genre/trope) is different. So I pick the Y I am interested in at the moment. Easy! But if X and Y are the same, I am wildly more likely to pick THIS over THAT because THIS has a Z (wordcount) of 200,000, while THAT has a Z of 30,000.

Both, in this case, are awesomely long, which makes them full of win (I will NEVER knock a 30k story for being too short!!). But when I'm out looking for that big Z, the massive, super-epic fic, it's something of a disappointment to realize that you've misread the old system (200KB) for the new system (200k). And it doesn't even matter the quality of the fic! It could be the greatest fic in the universe! I will STILL be disappointed, because my EXPECTATION in terms of wordcount was much, much higher than what I actually got.

Which is why, my dear friends, I ask you to be careful when labeling fic recs. Sometimes the author has used the old system. Maybe it's an older fic. Maybe they're just used to the KB system instead of the k=thousand system. Whatever, it's all good.

But for the love of jeebus, PLEASE don't just label a "KB" story with: (number)~K

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] zeenell, [livejournal.com profile] psuedo_catalyst and I saw The Academy Is... in Portland, Maine, and it was maybe one of the best concerts I've been to. The venue was smaller than my apartment, and we were basically in the second/third row from the stage? Despite sitting with the parents for both of the openers. YEAH. Plus, we were on the Carden side of the stage, so I got to spend the show probably-not-so-sekritly admiring his Carden-ness. From about two feet away.

Guys, Mike really does have the dorkiest smile ever. Also he doesn't stand still on stage for more than a couple of seconds, and is clearly at least in guy-love with everyone in his band.

Ramblings about how awesome TAI... is under here! \0/ )

Okay, so now the bit everyone is actually here for: Pictures! \0/ Like I said, my pics with Mike (T____T) and Sisky (also T___T ) didn't come out, but my pic with Bill did, so yay! for that. =D And, y'know, I took all the other ones, so it's like I'm there in spirit. *gets her Tom Conrad on* Mostly the lighting was just really bad. Damn you, rotation of the Earth!! *shakes fist* But I tried to lighten these up in Photoshop enough that you can see them.

I'm in a weird mood, f-list. I'm not sure if I'm getting sick or just feeling oddly depressed (either would be sad, but especially the last, because how can I be depressed during ~*PRIDE*~!? D= ), but in any case, I'm kind of blah at the moment.

I need your help.

Rec me something lovely.

I'm sure most of you are at least somewhat aware of my fandom/shipping preferences, so I won't bother listing everything (plus that would take a lot of time). Indulge my recent JoBros/Kradam/Bandom obsessions, or link me to your favorite Due South feel-good fic that's been around for a decade or more. I want your old jeans fic, your oversized, fuzzy sweater fic, your sweatpants-and-Ben&Jerry's fic. What's the bookmark you click when you need a little bit of happy? (And yes, 50k+ fics still count as "a little bit of happy".)

Please no: heavy angst/no-happy-ending fic, BDSM (just not in the mood), character death, similarly depressing things. I would assume this would be covered under "happy", but this is fandom. XD

And, since fair's fair, here's my Fuzzy Sweater Fic:

Or you can ask meta- questions like 'what was the inspiration for creating ____?'

SPN!Tour is a set of roadtrip itineraries based on the show "Supernatural," which airs on The CW. The main characters on the show, Sam and Dean Winchester, travel across the United States, seeking out and taking on demons, ghosts, and other dangers of the supernatural realm. Each itinerary was created with the goal of "making good time" -- you'll travel to multiple states, pull long days in the car, and spend the night in the cheapest motels you can find. The itinerary names come from songs released by the band Kansas, who gave us the ultimate Winchester anthem, "Carry On, Wayward Son." So grab some fans or friends, give the old Impala an oil change, and hit the road. And remember -- driver picks the music.
--From the brochure. Yes, we have a brochure.

You know you all want in on this, so head on over to [livejournal.com profile] spntour and check it out! We will be leaving from Richardson, TX on December 27th (gathering on the 26th) and heading out for a two-week roadtrip across 9 states, hitting locations from 10 episodes of Supernatural, plus Lawrence, KS, and Roswell, NM (just for fun!) before landing back in Richardson on January 8th.

Our dream is to have multiple cars full of fangirls, traveling down the open road and communicating via an awesome walkie-talkie network, staying in cheap motels and eating crappy diner food and having a seriously cool adventure together. (Doesn't that sound awesome? Don't you want in on this? Yes, you do. Go to [livejournal.com profile] spntour and join us!)

(Even if you can't join us, please consider spreading the word? We're really doing this by word-of-mouth, so if you have f-listers who might be interested, please let them know about us!)

Hey, y'all! It has come to my attention that I have nearly 300 people friended, and a good number of those are mutual friends. I am also aware that I am no longer active in some fandoms I used to be very active in, and I'm very active in some fandoms I used to blatantly dislike (goddamn you, bandom, for winning me over! XD ).

As such, I am declaring this week to be De-Friending Amnesty Week on my journals, both LJ and DW.

What this means is that if you, for whatever reason, would like to de-friend my journals, you are more than welcome to do so, and I promise I won't hold it against you, or wonder what I did, or start some wankfest about how you don't love me.

I've also done a small friends-cut of my own; if you've been cut and would like to be added back, feel free to comment.

Comments are screened, so feel free to drop me a line if you're leaving, or if you're staying, or for whatever reason. (Commenting is NOT required! If you're totally sick of me and just want to de-friend, that's completely OK.)

Best,
Solarcat

PS--You're always allowed to de-friend me if you're sick of seeing me around, but I know that can be awkward for some people, which is why I have declared this Amnesty Week. <3

Hey guys! Know I haven't updated in a while, but I figured I'd give everyone on ye olde f-list a heads-up that my workplace is hiring. Two of my coworkers officially handed in their resignations this week (we wish them the best of luck at their new jobs!), so we are hiring!

Yes, okay, there is a lot of Jesus, and knowledge of Catholicism is required (since it's... y'know, a CATHOLIC publisher). But if you fit the bill and are in the area, it's a nice workplace, the benefits are great (lots of paid vacation time! health insurance! \0/ ), and hey, I'm here! Can't beat that. XD

ANYWAY, job postings are here:

Editorial Projects Coordinator: http://www.bbboston.org/pageJobs_view.cfm?jobid=7474

Associate Children's Editor: http://www.bbboston.org/pageJobs_view.cfm?jobid=7477
(Note: This job description may be edited in the near future; the editor who is leaving says it is not complete/updated, so they probably popped it up online as fast as they could. This is a BIG job--we only have one other Children's editor. Together they handle our entire children's publishing department. The job includes acquisitions and developmental editing of books for children ages 0-12, basically.)

If you're in the Boston area, in publishing, and are looking for a job, you might want to take a look! (But seriously. You have to be Catholic, or able to fake it really, really well. This place is run by nuns, you work with nuns, and all our publishing is for a Catholic audience. There is a large statue of Jesus in our entryway. NOT KIDDING ABOUT THE CATHOLIC PART.)

NOTE: If this doesn't fit you but you know someone who might be interested, PLEASE feel free to link them! This is a public post. And they need people NOW, so they will be hiring quickly. Get your resume in NOW.

Default icons.

Most of us have them, I would venture. But in changing my default icon recently, I got to thinking about how we choose default icons.

I know that in some cases, I associate icons with people almost as strongly as I associate their online handles (which is saying something, since in many cases the only name I have for someone is their online handle!). For example, long before I was friends with [livejournal.com profile] sansets, I knew her default icon (and in fact I had a moment of "Oh, hey, YOU!" during the friending process, which I am admitting here only because it's relevant to the topic at hand *shame*). BTW, [livejournal.com profile] sansets? You are never allowed to change your icon, or I will have to hurt you~, okay? All my <3, Me.

That's just a tiny example, but I was thinking about it. What impact does a default icon have? Do we draw conclusions about users based on their default icon? If, for instance, a default icon isn't overly polished, or if it's pixelated, or hard to read, or not 100x100px, or any number of other things that might be considered "faults", does that affect our perception of the user the icon is representing?

I guess I'm pondering this because icons ARE representational in the LJ/DW-verse, where we often communicate solely by text. The icons a we use may be the only visual representation of us that our friends and acquaintances see.

So besides the question of perception (that is, what impact do you think others' icons/icon choices have on your perceptions of them), I'm also wondering what, if any, consideration goes into selecting your own default icon. Have you had the same icon for years and years, or does it change more frequently? Do you prefer a more general image for your default, or is it a fandom-based icon? Do you mean your icon to make any sort of statement, or represent something about you?

Because I always try to do a bit of self-analysis when I do these sorts of posts, I guess I'll take a look at my own icon, as well as my perception of others'.

Cut to Save Your F-lists! )

Title: Spyro! (Or, The One Where Spencer is a Small Purple Dragon)
Author: [profile] solar_cat
Fandom: Bandom: PATD/TYV, FoB, tiny amounts of CS and TAI.
Pairing: PATD/TYV GSF, minor Pete/Patrick, hints of Gabe/William
Rating: PG

Summary: It took Spencer approximately five seconds to realize he had wings.

Notes: This fic is entirely [profile] monroe_nell's fault. She commented on Twitter about how the shorthand for Spencer/Ryan was "Spyro", which only made her think about the video games. To which I replied, well, obviously Spencer Smith is a small purple dragon! And then suddenly I was writing this fic.
